How to Build Links for Bing vs Google

Link building is a very important SEO practice that builds site authority and ranking on search engines. Several link building practices mostly focus on how to build links for Google (the main search engine) but if you want to gain more traffic, you should build links for every search engine.

As it turns out, Bing ranks as the second most popular search engine in the world, therefore, building links for Bing should be a top priority.

How to build quality links for Bing vs Google

The great thing about building links for both search engines is that SEO strategies work similarly across both platforms, so you wouldn’t have to develop different strategies to get your site to rank on both search engines.

In this article, I will be sharing tips on how to builds for Bing and Google.

1. Backlinks

Backlinks are very important when it comes to building your site authority because search engines like Google and Bing take your link profile into count when ranking sites.

When it comes to building links for these search engines, both require you to build quality links, however, one focuses on quality while the other focuses more on quantity.

It is very clear that Google values a few high-quality links to a lot of low-quality links. I have come across sites with hundreds of links that rank lower than other sites with just a few links. For Google, it is all about quality.

Bing, on the other hand, focuses on the number of links pointing to your site. Having hundreds of linking pointing to your site is considered a sign of popularity and would make Bing consider your content good enough to appear on its first page.

However, Bing also considers quality although it doesn’t take it as seriously as Google.

To build links for Bing and Google, you have to focus on getting more high-quality backlinks. You can start by building at most 20 backlinks from high-authority sites every month.

Whatever you do, do not engage in spammy paid links or link schemes as both search engines would heavily penalize your site for it. When building links try to get backlinks from high-authority domains like .gov .org and .edu domains, also take the domain age of the website into count.

2. Anchor Text

If you have been following SEO strategies for building backlinks with Google as the search engine in mind, then you should know the importance of anchor text diversity.

Sites with too much exact-match anchor text have faced heavy penalties since the Google Penguin Update in 2012.

Bing, on the other hand, encourages webmasters to build links and include the targeted keywords in the anchor text. This is why many sites with most of the targeted keyword in the anchor text rank higher on Bing results page.

The problem with following this strategy is that you will be hurting your chances of ranking on Google as you will get hit by several penalties for over-optimizing the anchor text.

In this case, you can’t follow Google’s or Bing’s rules for anchor text optimizing completely, that is, if you want to rank on both search engines. To rank on both search engines, use a blend of the targeted keywords with partial matching, long tail words in your anchor text.

This way, your anchor isn’t over-optimized and you wouldn’t have to worry about Google Penguin penalties. Using a few of the targeted keywords also increases your chances of ranking on Bing which is a win–win on both sides.

Before doing this, check on your competitors who rank well on both search engines with a link analysis tool, focus on the ones that work for them and starting building links and optimizing your anchor text in a similar way.

3. Social Media Signals

If you want your site to rank higher on Bing then you have to drive social media links to your site. According to Bing, this shows influence which means that your followers are continuously sharing your information.

This is one of the reasons why many SEO experts have included their links in their social media profiles. Others go further by sharing their content on social media and hosting several events, giveaways and contests to stay active on social media.

Google, on the other hand, doesn’t place much emphasis on social media signals, however, it will make your site more influential and trusted which will improve your site rankings on both search engines.

4. Internal Linking

Internal linking is a great way to reduce the bounce rate of your site. Sites with high bounce rates tend to rank lower on search engines as it is believed that their content is of low quality. Thus, the higher your bounce rate, the lower your chances of ranking.

This goes for both search engines which is why you have to reduce your bounce rate in any way possible. The best way to do so is to link to several other pages on your site.

This will not only reduce your bounce rate as visitors would definitely visit several pages on your site before leaving, but it would also improve your site rankings.

5. Outbound Links

Outbound links help search engines understand your content better which is why you should only link to sites that relate with the content you have on the page.

Linking to high authority sites also boosts the quality of your content thus increasing the chances of your site ranking on the first page of both search engines.

This strategy works well for both search engines, however, you’d have to be careful about how many outbound links you have on the site. The number of outbound links you can place on the page will depend on the length of the content.

Remember, you will also be placing several internal links on the same page. Having too many links on one page wouldn’t do your site rankings any good.
For a content totaling 1,000 words, at most 5 links should be enough.

You can choose which you want to be internal or outbound links. The higher your site authority, the more links you can place on the page.

Other Useful Contents

Although Google holds more than 80% of the global market share, it would be great to optimize for other search engines which will boost your site’s traffic.

However, don’t sabotage the SEO practices you have already put in place for Google just because you want to build links for Bing. If you follow the techniques above, you should be able to easily build links for Bing and Google.
